When Trust Doesn’t Make Sense

This seven-day devotional tackles the hard questions we often keep to ourselves. Why do people who ignore God seem to prosper? Why does following Him sometimes mean waiting, struggling, and facing disappointment? If we still have to work hard and face setbacks, what is the point of trusting God at all? Day 1: The Question We Are Afraid to Ask
Day one names the quiet struggle many believers carry. We pray, obey, serve, and work hard. Yet we watch others who disregard God appear to advance with little effort. Over time, disappointment reshapes our expectations, and faith can start to feel unrewarding.

This is not a new problem. The psalmist wrestled with the exact same tension. He looked at the prosperity of those who ignored God and wondered if his devotion was a waste of time. The prophet Jeremiah asked why the way of the wicked prospers. God did not condemn these questions. He met His servants right in the middle of them.

The real danger is not in asking difficult questions. The danger is in letting disappointment become the only lens through which we view God. Questions can actually lead us closer to Him if we bring them honestly into His presence.

Faith does not require us to pretend we understand everything. It invites us to trust God even while we seek understanding. Sometimes the beginning of deeper faith is not having all the answers. It is having the courage to bring our questions before the One who does.

The reflection asks you to get honest. Have you felt your efforts to follow God were not producing the results you expected? What hidden expectations have you placed on Him? Are you bringing your disappointments to God, or are you letting them quietly distance you from Him?

The prayer is simple and direct. Father, You already know the questions and disappointments I carry. Help me to bring them honestly before You instead of letting them weaken my faith. Teach me to trust You even when I do not fully understand Your ways. Draw me closer to You as I seek both Your wisdom and Your presence.
