Behold: Fix Your Focus in a World of Distraction
We live in the most distracted era in human history. From the moment our eyes open, our attention gets grabbed by notifications, group chats, breaking news, and viral videos. By the time we even roll out of bed, our minds are already tired. This five-day plan from Change Conference points out the quiet danger in all that noise. We can live completely unaware of the presence of God right in front of us. The whole plan is built around one simple command from Jesus. Look up.
Day 1: The Word We Keep Skipping Over
Day one starts with a familiar verse from Revelation 3:20. Jesus says, “Behold! I stand at the door and knock.” Most of us breeze past that first word. But the reading slows down and explains it. In the original language, “behold” is not a gentle suggestion. It is a sudden, urgent command. It means look up. Open your eyes. Pay attention to something you are currently ignoring.
That changes the whole picture. Jesus is not playing hide and seek with your life. He is not waiting for you to become good enough before He shows up. He is right here in your everyday environment. In your early morning commute. In the middle of your school day. In your bedroom during late-night anxiety. He is knocking on the door for your attention.
The reading names the lie we often believe. We think God only moves in big emotional moments. At a summer camp. At a massive conference. During a powerful church service. But the truth is quieter and closer than that. The problem is not that God has gone silent. The problem is that the noise of our daily routine has gotten too loud. We do not miss God because He walked away. We miss God because we stopped paying attention to Him.
So today’s invitation is small and doable. Interrupt the noise. You do not have to fix all your problems before you turn to Him. You just have to pause, look up, and let Him in. To behold Jesus is to make a conscious choice to prioritize His presence over whatever else is in front of you right now.
The practical step is simple. Sometime today, put your phone in another room or turn off all notifications. Sit in quiet silence for five minutes. Do not check texts. Do not scroll. Do not play music. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and quietly pray, “Jesus, I’m opening the door. Help me notice You today.”
The prayer underneath it all is honest. Jesus, forgive me for how easily I let small distractions capture my heart while ignoring Your presence. I get so caught up in scrolling and trying to handle life on my own that I forget You are standing right beside me. Today I choose to pause and look at You. Quiet the noise in my mind. Awaken me to Your closeness. Teach me what it truly means to behold You in every moment.
Do not let another day pass in a blur of distraction. Stop ignoring the One who is knocking right now. Open your eyes. Fix your gaze. It is time to behold Jesus.
