Insurance That Pays You to Stay Healthy? AIA Bets Filipinos Are Done With “Bahala Na”

Published

Most of us only start taking our health seriously after something goes wrong. That’s what AIA Philippines’ Rethink Healthy study found: 83% of Filipinos became more proactive about their health only after a major life event like illness, hospitalization, or job loss. The insurer’s answer is to reach people before the crisis, with an upgraded AIA Vitality that treats everyday habits as something worth rewarding.

Your health, translated into a number

The new Health Assessment looks at activity, nutrition, sleep, mental well-being, and alcohol and tobacco use, then boils it down to three measures:

Vitality Age: how your body is doing compared to your actual age
Vitality Health Priority: where you should focus first
Vitality Future Health: how many extra healthy years you could gain by changing your habits

That last one makes the stakes concrete. It’s less “eat better” and more “here’s what your next decade could look like.”

Your meals, graded

The Food Tracker lets members snap a photo of a meal and get a rating, calorie and macronutrient breakdown, and personalized tips, plus a weekly report on their eating patterns. For anyone who has ever lied to themselves about “just a small merienda,” that’s either helpful or humbling.

The gamified part

Members start at Bronze and climb through Silver and Gold to Platinum by earning points for exercising, eating well, sleeping enough, and completing assessments. The perks include up to 50% off Nike, up to 15% off Garmin devices and Travel Club luggage, and a free Vitality Health Check at MediCard with a free doctor consultation if results fall outside the normal range.

The bigger picture

Insurance has traditionally been something you hope never to use. Programs like this try to flip that, making the policy something you engage with every day. Whether Filipinos will log their meals and chase Gold status remains to be seen, but the pitch is clear: the shift from bahala na (come what may) to handa na (ready) starts with small daily choices.

AIA Vitality is available with AIA Critical Protect Plus, AIA Critical Protect 100, AIA All-in-One, and BPI AIA’s MultiCare Protect and Critical Care 100.
