Your Customers No Longer Just Google You. They Ask AI and AI Listens to Social Media

For years, getting found online was pretty straightforward: rank on Google, show up in search results, and make sure your website answered the questions people were asking.

That playbook is no longer enough.

Today, customers may open ChatGPT, Gemini, or another AI assistant and ask, “What’s a good affordable skincare brand for sensitive skin?” or “Which local bakery is best for custom cakes?” The answer they receive may be shaped not only by your website, but by reviews, social posts, news coverage, and the conversations people are having about your brand.

Generative AI has become part of the discovery process, and social media has become part of the information AI learns from.

AI has entered the customer journey
The latest Digital 2027 report from We Are Social and Meltwater estimates that 3.24 billion people now use generative AI tools each month, about 38.9% of the global population. That is a 57.2% increase in just one year, with 1.2 billion new users added.

At the same time, social media remains massive. The report counts 5.81 billion social media user identities worldwide, equivalent to 69.9% of the global population.

Put those two trends together, and the implication is clear: people are not abandoning social platforms for AI. They are using both, often at different points in the same buying journey.

A customer might discover a product on TikTok, check reviews on Instagram or Facebook, search Google for more details, then ask an AI tool to compare options or summarize what people are saying.

Search is not dead, but it is changing
Despite AI’s rapid growth, search engines still matter. The report notes that online adults are 74% more likely to say they visit search engines when researching brands than they are to visit an AI platform.

That means businesses should not panic and abandon SEO. But they should stop treating search as the only place where brand visibility happens.

The new reality is a layered customer journey:

Social media creates awareness, trust, and conversation.

Search engines help customers verify, compare, and research.

AI tools synthesize information and increasingly influence decisions.

Reviews and community discussions provide the social proof that shapes all three.

If your brand only exists on one channel, you are leaving your reputation to chance.

AI listens to what people say
Here is the uncomfortable part for brands: you can control your website, your ads, and your official social accounts. You cannot fully control what customers say in comments, reviews, group chats, forums, or viral posts.

Yet those conversations increasingly matter.

As We Are Social APAC CEO Suzie Shaw explains, the conversations, recommendations, and opinions people share online are increasingly informing both the answers AI gives and the decisions people make. Brands that win will not simply be the ones that appear in AI-generated answers, they will be the ones people are genuinely interested in, talking about, and recommending.

In other words, your reputation is becoming part of your search strategy.

What this means for small businesses
You do not need a huge budget to adapt. You need consistency across the places where customers form opinions.

1. Make your business easy to understand
Your website, social bios, Google Business Profile, and content should clearly answer:

  • What do you sell?
  • Who is it for?
  • What makes you different?
  • Where are you located or how can customers order?
  • What do customers say about you?

AI tools are better at summarizing clear, consistent information than deciphering vague messaging.

2. Create content that answers real questions
Think beyond “buy now” posts. Publish content that addresses the questions customers already ask:

  • “How do I choose the right product?”
  • “What should I expect before ordering?”
  • “What makes this service worth it?”
  • “What are common mistakes to avoid?”
  • “How does your pricing work?”

Helpful content gives both customers and AI systems more useful context about your business.

3. Encourage honest customer conversations
Reviews, testimonials, user-generated content, and community discussions are no longer just social proof, they are part of your digital footprint.

Ask satisfied customers for reviews, reshare genuine feedback, respond professionally to concerns, and make it easy for people to talk about their experience.

A strong reputation cannot be manufactured overnight. But it can be built deliberately.

4. Be present where your audience spends time
The report found that YouTube captured the largest share of global social media time, followed by WhatsApp and Instagram. TikTok led in average time spent per active user, at one hour and 55 minutes daily.

That does not mean every business needs to be on every platform. It means you should understand where your customers already spend time and show up there with useful, credible, human content.

The new visibility checklist
Before your next marketing push, ask:

  • Can customers find accurate information about us through search?
  • Do our social channels show real proof of our product, service, and customer experience?
  • Are we responding to reviews, comments, and questions?
  • Are we creating content that answers customer questions, not just promotes offers?
  • If someone asked an AI tool about our category, would our brand have enough credible information to be part of the conversation?

Your customers have not stopped searching. They have simply added another way to ask questions.

AI is changing how people discover brands, but social media remains central to where people spend time, form preferences, and share recommendations.

The businesses that thrive will not be the ones chasing every new platform. They will be the ones building a clear, trustworthy, and conversation-worthy brand across search, social, reviews, and AI-powered discovery.

Because the next time a customer asks AI about your industry, you want the answer to include you, for the right reasons.
