Megaworld Corp.’s 30-hectare The Mactan Newtown has been designated the Tourism, Culture, and Investment Capital of Lapu-Lapu City under Executive Order No. 2026-072, signed by Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” Chan.

The executive order recognizes the township’s contribution to tourism, cultural activities, employment generation, and investment attraction. It also directs city departments to coordinate with Megaworld and other stakeholders on programs that promote tourism products, cultural exhibitions, investment, livelihood opportunities, and sustainable development.

Policy Recognition
The order cited The Mactan Newtown’s role in expanding business and investment activity through its offices, hotels, commercial and retail establishments, tourism facilities, and other enterprises.

“The continued development of The Mactan Newtown has contributed to the growth of business and investment activity in Lapu-Lapu City,” the executive order stated.

Megaworld President and Chief Executive Officer Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso said the recognition supports the company’s long-term plan for the township.

“The recognition affirms our continuing vision for The Mactan Newtown as an integrated township that demonstrates how tourism, culture, and investments can come together to unlock a city’s potential, create more opportunities for its people, and strengthen its position as a destination for both visitors and businesses,” Gutierrez-Alfonso said.

MICE Expansion
A key component of the township’s investment case is Mactan Expo, Megaworld’s P1.5-billion stand-alone convention center and its first major entry into the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector.

The facility, which has nearly 10,000 square meters of event space, was inaugurated in March 2026 and subsequently hosted events connected to the 48th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit.

Megaworld has positioned Mactan Expo as part of a broader strategy to expand its MICE business and link convention demand with its hospitality, retail, and leisure assets within the township.

Mixed-Use Growth Platform
The Mactan Newtown combines residential condominiums, office spaces, hotels, retail and commercial establishments, and tourism and recreational facilities.

The township is home to more than 1,000 hotel room keys across Savoy Hotel Mactan and Mercure Mactan Cebu, as well as dining concepts including Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips and Gordon Ramsay Street Burger.

The upcoming Mactan World Museum is expected to add a cultural anchor to the development, supporting the township’s positioning as both a visitor destination and a business location.

Outlook
The designation formalizes cooperation between the Lapu-Lapu City Government and Megaworld in developing initiatives covering tourism, culture, investment, employment, and sustainable local development.

For investors, the development’s performance will likely depend on the strength of Mactan Expo’s events pipeline, hotel occupancy, office leasing, retail activity, and residential demand. The executive order adds policy support to the township’s long-term positioning, but commercial results will remain the key measure of its investment momentum.
