iPhone Duo: The ₱160K Foldable That’s Splitting Tech Fans
Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, has arrived with a ₱159,990 price tag and a design that’s winning praise and raising eyebrows. Preorders start October 16, with shipping on October 23.
A Second Chance for Mini Lovers
When Apple discontinued the iPhone Mini, many fans mourned the loss of a truly pocketable smartphone. The iPhone Duo may be the spiritual successor they’ve been waiting for.
The outer screen is 5.4 inches, the same size as the iPhone 12 Mini. When unfolded, the inner display expands to 7.6 inches. Closed, it’s about the size of the old Mini; open, it’s slightly smaller than the 8.3-inch iPad Mini.
For small-phone enthusiasts, this is a dream form factor, if they can stomach the price.
Price vs. Practicality
At ₱159,990 for the base model and up to ₱255,000 for the top configuration, the Duo is one of the most expensive smartphones ever released.
CNET’s Patrick Holland called it “the perfect size” but urged Apple to sell “half an iPhone Duo for half the price.”
AppleInsider noted the Duo is “a godsend for mini iPhone fans, minus the price,” adding that many Mini loyalists are women who prefer smaller, more manageable devices.
Even enthusiastic fans admit the cost is hard to justify for everyday use.
Android Users Aren’t Impressed
Samsung Galaxy Fold owners, who have been using foldables since 2019, say the Duo doesn’t bring much new to the table.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Samsung fans are “thoroughly unimpressed.” Critics question whether Apple is late to a game Samsung has already mastered.
Specs Under the Microscope
Apple is staying quiet on some hardware details, fueling debate among spec-focused buyers.
The Duo comes with 12GB of RAM, a number Apple doesn’t highlight in its marketing. It lacks the new variable-aperture camera found on the iPhone 18 Pro.
ZDNet’s Jason Perlow says this is intentional. Apple prefers to emphasize screen brightness (3,000 nits) and cinematic video features over raw specs.
Apple’s Marketing Strategy
Instead of competing on numbers, Apple is selling a story.
The entire keynote was filmed using the new iPhones, showcasing their camera and video capabilities.
A new blur animation when opening and closing the Duo creates the illusion of a transparent outer screen, a visual hook designed for social media.
Fstoppers’ Lee Morris, a professional videographer, called the footage “incredible” but said, “I love that this technology exists. I just do not think it is my phone.”
What This Means for Buyers
The iPhone Duo is a bold first step into foldables for Apple, but it’s clearly aimed at early adopters and brand loyalists rather than the mass market.
If you loved the Mini and want that size again, the Duo’s outer screen may be irresistible.
If you’re spec-driven or already own a Galaxy Fold, the Duo may feel like an expensive catch-up.
For most consumers, waiting for a future generation or a price drop may be the smarter move.
