The TikTok Founder Who Became Asia’s Richest Person
How Zhang Yiming turned ByteDance’s global influence and its AI ambitions into a fortune exceeding $105 billion.
Zhang Yiming, the founder of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has become Asia’s richest person, with an estimated fortune of more than $105 billion. His rise reflects not only TikTok’s global reach but also the growing value of ByteDance’s artificial-intelligence business.
At 43, Zhang has overtaken Indian industrialist Gautam Adani on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His wealth has increased more than eightfold since March 2019, when Bloomberg estimated his fortune at approximately $13 billion.
TikTok Built the Foundation
TikTok made ByteDance a global technology powerhouse. Its recommendation algorithm helped the app attract hundreds of millions of users, turning short-form video into one of the world’s most influential digital-media formats.
However, Zhang’s fortune is tied to ByteDance’s private-company valuation, not simply to TikTok’s advertising revenue. Recent valuations from investment firms including BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, and T. Rowe Price helped push Zhang’s estimated wealth up by more than $12 billion in September alone.
Because ByteDance is not publicly traded, estimates can vary significantly. Bloomberg placed Zhang’s fortune above $105 billion, while Forbes’ real-time estimate was considerably lower, illustrating how difficult it is to value privately held companies.
AI Is Driving the Next Chapter
ByteDance is increasingly positioning itself as an AI company. Its Doubao chatbot and Seedance video-generation tool have expanded the company’s presence beyond social media and entertainment. ByteDance is also reportedly training a large-scale AI model, signaling that it intends to compete in one of the technology industry’s most valuable markets.
This shift matters because AI has created a new wave of investor enthusiasm. Companies with advanced models, large user bases, and vast amounts of data are attracting higher valuations even when their AI businesses are still developing.
For ByteDance, the opportunity is especially significant. The company already has a global audience through TikTok, recommendation technology refined through years of user data, experience creating viral digital products, multiple platforms where AI tools can be integrated, and a large-scale commercial ecosystem for monetizing new services.
TikTok may have created Zhang’s public profile, but AI is helping redefine the value of his technology empire.
The TikTok Crisis That Did Not End the Story
Zhang’s rise is also notable because ByteDance recently faced the possibility of losing access to the U.S. market. A U.S. law required ByteDance to divest TikTok’s American operations or face restrictions that could have effectively removed the app from the country. TikTok was briefly unavailable to U.S. users in January 2025 after the deadline took effect.
The crisis was eventually addressed through a new U.S. entity. Under the restructuring completed in January 2026, American and international investors received an 80.1% stake, while ByteDance retained 19.9%. The new arrangement placed key responsibilities, including U.S. user data, cybersecurity, and the recommendation system, under the new venture.
The agreement removed one of the biggest uncertainties surrounding ByteDance’s future valuation. Rather than losing the U.S. market entirely, the company preserved TikTok’s American operations while maintaining a continuing economic interest.
From Industrial Wealth to Algorithmic Wealth
Adani built his fortune through traditional industries such as infrastructure, energy, and logistics. Zhang’s wealth comes from a different model: algorithms, user attention, data, software, and artificial intelligence.
That contrast reflects a broader change in how immense fortunes are created. In previous decades, Asia’s richest individuals often built their wealth through ports, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, or energy. Today, digital platforms and AI businesses can create comparable fortunes at extraordinary speed.
Zhang’s story is therefore bigger than TikTok. It shows how a company can begin with entertainment, expand through technology, survive regulatory pressure, and then use AI to pursue an entirely new phase of growth.
The Bigger Business Lesson
ByteDance’s transformation offers an important lesson for entrepreneurs: a successful product can become the foundation for a much larger ecosystem.
TikTok attracted the audience. ByteDance’s technology created the advantage. AI may become the next engine of value.
Zhang Yiming’s fortune is still an estimate, and private-company valuations can change quickly. But his rise to the top of Asia’s wealth rankings highlights a clear trend: the next generation of billion-dollar businesses may be built not only around what people watch, but also around the algorithms that predict, create, and personalize what comes next.
