Spiritual Hoarding

Published

on

We rarely wake up one morning with a cluttered soul. It usually starts small. A little compromise here, a quiet secret there, a mistake we decide we will just take to the grave. Over time, those hidden corners fill up. Our inner world gets cramped, heavy, and hard to navigate.

This four-day devotional from Chris Dew Ministries calls this spiritual hoarding. It looks at Psalm 32, where the writer admits that keeping silent made his bones waste away. Hidden sin does not just sit there quietly. It slowly drains our joy, our energy, and our connection with God. Like a house packed with junk, our hearts become a maze of shame and secrecy.

But here is the good news for Day 1. God does not ask us to clean ourselves up so He will love us. He already loves us, and that love is exactly why He invites us to clean up. Confession is not about humiliation. It is about liberation. The promise is that the person whose sin is covered finds true peace and wholeness.

Today is not about making a massive list of every wrong thing you have ever done. It is about asking one simple, honest question. What have I been hiding? The very first step in cleaning out a spiritual house is just turning on the lights.

The reflection asks you to picture your own spiritual house. Is it clean, cluttered, or completely overrun? It asks what specific memory or habit you have decided to keep secret, and how that secrecy has actually affected you.

The prayer is a gentle request for honesty. It asks the Holy Spirit to turn on the lights, to show what is hidden, and to give us the courage not to look away. It ends with a beautiful reminder that God desires our freedom, not our shame.

You do not have to clean it all up today. You just have to let the light in.
